EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph illustration, titled "Hyracotherium or Eohippus, the Dawn Horse," is a stunning representation of one of the earliest known members of the horse family, dating back to the Tertiary and Eocene periods around 50 million years ago. Depicted here is the small, agile creature with a body resembling a modern-day deer and a set of four toes on each hind limb, characteristic of perissodactyls, an order of extinct mammals that also includes mastodons and rhinoceroses. The Dawn Horse, also known as Eohippus, is considered a transitional form between the early horses and their more advanced descendants. Its discovery marked a significant milestone in the understanding of horse evolution, as it provided evidence that horses once had a more primitive build before evolving into the large, hoofed animals we know today. This beautiful illustration was created by the talented German artist and book illustrator, Heinrich Harder, in 1916. Harder was renowned for his work in landscape painting but also made a name for himself in the scientific community with his meticulously detailed illustrations of prehistoric animals. This particular piece is from his collection "Tiere der Urwelt" or "Animals of the Prehistoric World," published in Hamburg. The intricate details and vivid colors of this illustration transport us back in time, allowing us to imagine the lush, ancient landscapes where the Dawn Horse once roamed. This piece is not only a testament to the beauty and wonder of the natural world but also a reminder of the rich history that lies beneath our feet.
