This painting by Maurice Wilson depicts Ichthyornis dispar, an extinct bird species that lived during the late Cretaceous period, around 112 to 100 million years ago. Ichthyornis, a member of the Ichthyornithiformes order, is often referred to as the 'fish-eating gull' due to its distinctive long, grey, and curved bill, which resembled that of a gull but was more similar in structure to the beaks of modern fish-eating birds. The Ichthyornis is shown in its habitat, a daytime scene along a shoreline teeming with fish. With its bill submerged in the water, the bird appears to be calling out to its offspring or perhaps hunting for food.
