EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Sheet 3 of a series of posters created by the renowned Victorian artist, Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, circa 1862. The illustration showcases two distinct prehistoric creatures, the Iguanodon and the Hylaeosaurus. Both animals were key discoveries in the emerging field of dinosaur paleontology during the 19th century. The Iguanodon, depicted on the left, is an armored ornithopod dinosaur, characterized by its long, curved teeth, thumb spike, and bipedal stance. With its crested head and powerful hind limbs, this dinosaur was believed to have been a formidable herbivore, capable of reaching lengths of up to 9 meters. On the right, the Hylaeosaurus, an ankylosaurid nodosaur, is shown with its heavily armored back and distinctive frilled neck. This herbivorous dinosaur, which could grow up to 6 meters long, was identified as a member of the Thyreophora group, known for their protective armor. This illustration provides a glimpse into the rich prehistoric world that was just beginning to be uncovered during the Victorian era. The meticulous attention to detail in Hawkins' artwork, which was based on the latest scientific knowledge of the time, offers a fascinating window into the past, transporting us back to a day when these incredible creatures roamed the earth.
