EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the pivotal moment in the New Testament when Jesus, in the wilderness, is tempted by Satan. The scene unfolds in the arid, desolate landscape of the Judean desert, where Jesus, having fasted for forty days and forty nights, is at his most vulnerable. Satan, appearing in the form of an alluring serpent or a seductive figure, presents Jesus with a series of special offers designed to test his faith and challenge his divine mission. The first offer, shown in this print, is the temptation to turn stones into bread to alleviate his hunger. Jesus, steadfast in his resolve, quotes Scripture, reminding Satan that man shall not live on bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. The second temptation, not depicted in this print, is the offer to throw himself down from the pinnacle of the temple and trust that angels will save him. Jesus again refuses, quoting Scripture and reminding Satan that he should not put the Lord his God to the test. The third and final temptation is the offer to worship Satan in exchange for all the kingdoms of the world. Jesus, once again, rejects Satan, declaring that it is written: 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.' This powerful image, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, is a poignant reminder of Jesus' unwavering commitment to his divine mission and his unyielding faith in the face of temptation. The wilderness setting, with its stark beauty and rugged terrain, serves to underscore the intensity and significance of this pivotal moment in the life of Jesus and in the history of Christianity.
