EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing astronomical chart, dating back to 1825, presents an enchanting representation of five constellations: Cygnus, Lyra, Anser, Lacerta, and Vulpecula. The image captures the imagination with its vivid depiction of mythological tales brought to life through the stars. At the center, Cygnus, the Swan, takes pride of place. According to Greek mythology, Zeus transformed himself into a swan to seduce the beautiful Leda, resulting in the birth of Helen of Troy and the twins Castor and Pollux. The constellation's distinctive shape, featuring a long, curved neck and outstretched wings, can be easily identified in the night sky. To the left of Cygnus lies Lyra, the Lyre, named after the musical instrument crafted by Apollo, the god of music and prophecy. The constellation's brightest star, Vega, is often referred to as the Lyre's harp string. In the lower right corner, Anser, the Goose, is shown being attacked by Vulpecula, the Fox. This constellation represents the story of Anser and Anseris, two swans who were turned into geese by Leda to protect them from the vengeful Typhon. Vulpecula, the fox, was sent by Hera to kill the geese, but was eventually thwarted by Zeus. At the upper right, Lacerta, the Lizard, is depicted. Its origin is less clear, with some believing it represents the Chimaera, a fire-breathing monster slain by the hero Bellerophon. Others believe it represents the lizard-like creature that guarded the golden apples in the Garden of the Hesperides. This chart invites us to explore the rich tapestry of mythology and astronomy, transporting us on a journey through the stars and the stories they tell.
