EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1919, captures Lady Sheila Chisholm, nee Margaret Sheila Mackellar, and her elder son, Anthony Hugh Francis Harry St. Clair-Erskine, the future 6th Earl of Rosslyn. At the time, Lady Sheila was married to Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, Lord Loughborough, the eldest son of the fifth Earl of Rosslyn. Loughborough was serving in the King's Royal Rifles during World War I, but his drinking and gambling habits led to a troubled marriage. The couple divorced in 1926. Prior to her divorce, Lady Sheila was linked romantically with Albert, Duke of York, who would later become King George VI. This scandal occurred in 1920, while Lady Sheila was still married to Lord Loughborough. Sheila went on to marry Sir John Millbanke, eleventh baronet, in 1928, and later, Prince Dimitri Romanoff of Russia in 1954. In this image, Lady Sheila and her son, Tony, are seen enjoying a quiet moment together as they read in the comfort of their home. The photograph, published in The Tatler, offers a glimpse into their intimate relationship and the bond they shared despite the challenges that their family faced. Lady Sheila's striking beauty and elegance are on full display, making this a truly captivating and timeless image from the annals of society history.
