EDITORS COMMENTS
"Leaving SS Ivernia, Boston Harbour: A Nostalgic Glimpse into the Past This evocative photograph captures the SS Ivernia as it departs from Boston Harbour in the early 1900s. Built by Swan Hunter and Wigham Richardson of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and launched in 1899, the SS Ivernia was a proud addition to the Cunard Line's impressive fleet. Commissioned to act as an intermediate ship, the SS Ivernia played a vital role in catering to the vast immigration trade between Liverpool and Boston, USA. The SS Ivernia was a symbol of hope and opportunity for thousands of immigrants, who embarked on a new life in the United States. The ship's elegant design and luxurious amenities made the transatlantic journey a more bearable experience for passengers. Tragically, the SS Ivernia's story did not end happily. On New Year's Day 1917, the ship was torpedoed and sunk 58 miles south-east of Cape Matapan, Greece, by a German U-Boat. The loss of the SS Ivernia was a significant blow to the Cunard Line and the many lives it had touched. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a bygone era, a time when the SS Ivernia represented the promise of a new beginning for so many. It is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit and the indomitable desire to seek out new opportunities, no matter the challenges that may lie ahead."
