EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the essence of firefighting in 19th century London, as Chief Officer Eyre Massey Shaws of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) stands proudly before his horse-drawn brougham outside his residence at Winchester House, located within the headquarters of the brigade in Southwark Bridge Road, SE1. Dressed in full uniform, complete with gleaming epaulets and a tall, peaked hat, Chief Officer Shaws exudes authority and command. The open carriage, or brougham, is drawn by a team of well-groomed greys, their coats glistening in the sunlight. The driver, also in uniform, sits atop the carriage, holding the reins with a confident grip. The brougham, a popular mode of transportation for the upper classes at the time, was a practical choice for the Chief Officer, allowing him to quickly and efficiently travel around the city to attend to the needs of the MFB. The Metropolitan Fire Brigade, founded in 1865, was the first permanent, paid fire brigade in London. Chief Officer Shaws, who joined the brigade in 1868, was an integral part of its early history. He rose through the ranks to become Chief Officer in 1870, a position he held until his retirement in 1893. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of a firefighting chief officer in Victorian London, highlighting the importance of horses and carriages in the transport of personnel and equipment during this period. The image is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of the men and horses of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, who worked tirelessly to protect the city from the threats of fire.
