EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determination and resilience of soldiers during World War I, as they trudge through a muddy and desolate landscape, likely on the Western Front. The image, titled "It's a long, long way," was taken by renowned South African photographer Leonard Raven-Hill (1867-1942) for the Abdulla Cigarette Co. Ltd. Raven-Hill, who was born in England but spent much of his career in South Africa, was known for his documentary work and his ability to capture the raw realities of life. The photograph, which dates from around 1914-1918, shows a group of soldiers, dressed in heavy coats and boots, making their way through a seemingly endless expanse of mud and water. The soldiers' faces are etched with the exhaustion and hardship of their journey, and their expressions convey a sense of camaraderie and mutual support. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers during the First World War, and the immense challenges they faced in the face of adversity. The Abdulla Cigarette Co. Ltd, based in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), was a major producer of tobacco products during this period. The company's involvement in the war effort is reflected in the presence of its logo on the soldiers' haversacks, a testament to the ways in which businesses and the military were intertwined during times of conflict. This powerful and moving image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of war and hardship, and reminding us of the enduring human spirit.
