EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Lord and Lady Loughborough, Margaret Sheila Mackellar Chisholm and Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, in the height of the Roaring Twenties in 1919. Lord Loughborough, eldest son of the fifth Earl of Rosslyn, and his Australian-born wife, Lady Sheila, had married in 1915, but their union was plagued by Lord Loughborough's drinking and gambling habits. By 1920, scandal swirled around the couple as Lady Sheila was linked romantically with Albert, Duke of York, the future King George VI, who at the time was still a married man himself. Despite the rumors, Lady Sheila went on to marry Sir John Millbanke, eleventh baronet, in 1928, and later, in 1954, she wed Prince Dimitri Romanoff of Russia. The photograph presents an image of elegance and refinement, yet the backstory of their tumultuous marriage and subsequent scandals adds a layer of intrigue and complexity to this portrait of the upper class couple. The photograph is a testament to the fascinating history of the aristocracy and the complexities of high society in the early 20th century. The image is a reminder of the intricate web of relationships, alliances, and scandals that shaped the lives of the elite during this era.
