Mary, who was affectionately known as 'Minnie' to her loved ones, was the daughter of the wealthy American department store magnate, Leiter Brothers, based in Chicago. Her opulent upbringing and striking beauty made her a sought-after figure in high society, both in the United States and Europe. When Mary met George Curzon, the ambitious and charismatic British statesman, at a ball in Paris in 1895, their connection was instantaneous. They married in 1896 and embarked on a remarkable journey that would take them to the pinnacle of British society, with George's appointment as Viceroy of India in 1899. Despite her privileged background, Mary proved to be an exceptional partner to her husband, supporting him in his political endeavors and using her charm and influence to further his career. However, her health began to decline in the early 1900s, and she was often bedridden due to a debilitating illness.
