EDITORS COMMENTS
This image transports us back to the mid-15th century in the Duchy of Burgundy, where the fashionable men of the time donned elaborate and ornate attire. The central figure wears an embroidered jerkin, or jacket, with hanging sleeves that are worn over a doublet and hose. The jerkin is adorned with intricate floral and geometric designs, showcasing the wealth and status of its owner. The sleeves, which can be pulled up and secured at the shoulder, allow for greater freedom of movement when engaging in various activities. The man also wears a pair of piked side-lacing boots, which are secured with spurs, indicating his readiness for horseback riding or hunting. His feet are further protected by a pair of cracowes, or high, pointed shoes, known as poulaines in other regions. Adding an extra layer of warmth and luxury, the jerkin is fur-lined and trimmed, with side vents that allow for ease of movement. Completing the ensemble is a chaperon, or hat, which is often worn with a fur mantle or cloak. The man carries a French dagger, with its scabbard intricately decorated to match the rest of his attire. This impressive display of wealth and fashion reflects the opulence and grandeur of the Burgundian court during the late Middle Ages. This photograph, taken from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of medieval Europe, providing us with a valuable insight into the fashion and lifestyle of the men of Bourgogne during the 15th century.
