EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of calm before the storm as members of the Middlesex Regiment prepare their defensive position at a street barricade in Spring 1918. The grins on several soldiers' faces suggest that the fierce fighting of Operation MICHAEL, which began on March 21, 1918, has not yet reached this particular street. Operation MICHAEL was a major offensive launched by the German army against the British forces on the Western Front during World War One. With over 10,000 guns firing over a million shells in just five hours, the German artillery barrage paved the way for 47 divisions to attack. Using infiltration tactics, the German storm troopers managed to bypass pockets of resistance and break through the British trench system, leaving the following waves of troops to 'mop up' any remaining resistance. In this image, the soldiers of the Middlesex Regiment, specifically the 1st, 1/7th, 16th, and 25th Battalions, are shown waiting for the German attack. Their expressions convey a sense of readiness and determination, despite the impending danger. The photograph is one of 19 official images from the album, offering a rare glimpse into the daily life and experiences of these brave soldiers during a pivotal moment in history. The photograph, taken in 1918, is a poignant reminder of the courage and resilience of the soldiers who faced the challenges of the Western Front during World War One. It is an important historical document that provides insight into the human stories behind the larger narrative of the war.
