EDITORS COMMENTS
Mytton Hall, the eccentric seat of John Mytton, Esq. (1796-1834), is nestled in the picturesque countryside of Halston, Shropshire, England. This photograph, taken from the back of the estate in the 1820s, showcases the circular garden and the vast expanse of parkland that surrounds the historic residence. John Mytton, a man of unusual habits and extravagant pursuits, was a local character known for his unconventional ways. He was famously depicted in a series of caricatures by the renowned English artist, Thomas Rowlandson, and his satirical collaborator, George Cruikshank. One of these illustrations, titled "Mytton and Alken Cheating at Cards," humorously portrays Mytton and his friend, the painter and sportsman, William Alken, engaging in a game of cards in the river, with the intention of cheating their way to victory. Despite the merriment and mischief that surrounded Mytton's public persona, the photograph of Mytton Hall offers a more serene and contemplative glimpse into the estate's beauty. The circular garden, with its meticulously trimmed hedges and immaculate topiary, frames the view of the house, while the extensive parkland stretches out towards the horizon, dotted with trees and winding paths. Mytton Hall, with its rich history and eccentric associations, remains an intriguing and enchanting piece of English country estate folklore. This photograph, a window into the past, invites us to imagine the stories and secrets that lie hidden within its walls and gardens.
