EDITORS COMMENTS
This unfinished watercolor painting depicts the Jackass Worwong, or Nemadactylus macropterus, a large bony fish native to the southern waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The illustration was created during the historic first voyage of Captain James Cook (1728-1779) to explore the southern continent, between 1768 and 1771. The painting is the work of Sydney Parkinson (1745-1771), a Scottish artist and naturalist who accompanied Cook on his expedition. The Jackass Worwong, also known as the Morwong or the Cheilodactylid Morwong, is a member of the Perciformes order, which includes perch-like fish. It is characterized by its large, elongated pectoral fins, which can span over a meter in length, giving it the appearance of a flying fish. The fish's common name derives from its distinctive odor, which some compare to that of a donkey. The painting is a testament to the spirit of discovery and exploration that defined the 18th century. Cook's voyage was a groundbreaking endeavor that expanded European knowledge of the world and its inhabitants, including its diverse marine life. Parkinson's illustrations, which were produced during the expedition, provided valuable documentation of the new species encountered and helped advance scientific understanding of the natural world. This unfinished watercolor painting offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of adventure and discovery. The image of the Jackass Worwong, with its striking features and intriguing name, serves as a reminder of the wonders that await us in the natural world and the importance of continuing to explore and document the unknown.
