EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Allegheny spurge, Pachysandra procumbens, also known as Allegheny pachysandra, mammee apple, or Santo Domingo apricot. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The meticulous engraving was executed by Stanghi, under the direction of the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). The Allegheny spurge is a low-growing, evergreen plant native to the southeastern United States and parts of Central and South America. Its small, white, tubular flowers bloom in late spring, giving way to edible, red-purple to black berries that resemble small apples. The plant was once believed to be related to the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae), but it is now classified in the family Pachysandraceae. The Allegheny spurge has a rich history in traditional medicine and food use. Indigenous peoples of the southeastern United States used the plant to treat various ailments, including stomach problems and diarrhea. The ripe berries were consumed as a food source and were described as having a sweet, apple-like flavor. Turpin's masterful illustration captures the intricate details of the Allegheny spurge's foliage, flowers, and fruit, providing a stunning representation of this fascinating plant. The use of hand-coloring adds a vibrant and lifelike quality to the engraving, making it a valuable addition to any botanical collection.
