Altar of Incense
Incense offering in Judaism was related to perfumed offerings on the altar of incense during the Tabernacle and the First and Second Temple period. It was an important component in the Temple in Jerusalem. Incense was burned daily on this altar during the morning and evening sacrifices. The incense that was used had to be made according to a specific formula, no other incense was allowed to be used. According to Jewish tradition, the incense was made by the Avtinas family, who kept the formula a closely guarded secret. Date: circa 1800

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the essence of Jewish tradition and devotion as it depicts the Altar of Incense in the ancient Temple of Jerusalem. Dating back to the Tabernacle period, the practice of offering perfumed incense on this altar was a significant component of Jewish worship. The daily offerings of incense were burned during the morning and evening sacrifices, adding a fragrant and symbolic layer to the ritual. The precise formula for creating the incense was closely guarded, passed down through generations of the Avtinas family, who held the sacred knowledge as a revered secret. The incense was not to be made or used in any other way outside of the Temple, making it a unique and essential element of Jewish religious practice. The altar itself, shown here in intricate detail, is a testament to the importance placed on this tradition. The golden altar, adorned with intricate carvings and ornate designs, stands proudly in the Temple, its purpose to connect the divine and the earthly realms through the fragrant offerings of incense. This image, captured in the 19th century, offers a glimpse into the rich history and traditions of Judaism, transporting us back in time to the sacred spaces of the Temple in Jerusalem. The Altar of Incense remains a powerful symbol of faith, devotion, and the enduring connection between the Jewish people and their religious heritage.
