EDITORS COMMENTS
On this handcoloured lithograph from 1898, we find ourselves transported back in time to a balcony in the heart of Paris, specifically on the renowned rue de Rivoli. The woman in the foreground, elegantly dressed in a mustard-hued crinoline gown with a pelerine, or cape, and a bonnet adorned with a delicate floral design, gazes out onto the bustling city below. Across the street, the iconic Louvre Museum and the Jardin des Tuileries can be seen, their grandeur a stark contrast to the intimate setting of the balcony. This image is an illustration taken from Octave Uzanne's influential book "Fashion in Paris," published by William Heinemann in London. The original illustration was created by Francois Courboin, and the lithograph is a faithful reproduction of his work. The year is 1864, a time when Paris was the epicenter of European fashion and society. It is interesting to note that this image predates the infamous Salon of 1865, where Edouard Manet's groundbreaking painting "Olympia" caused a scandal due to its unconventional depiction of a nude woman. Manet's painting, which also featured a black servant, challenged the traditional norms of the time and paved the way for modern art. The woman in our lithograph, with her elegant attire and refined posture, embodies the aesthetics of the French Empire under Napoleon III. Her dress, with its voluminous crinoline skirt and high waist, was a symbol of feminine beauty and grace during this period. The intricate details of her bonnet and mantelet, or cape, add to her allure, making this image a beautiful representation of 19th-century French fashion and culture.
