EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking chromolithograph depicts a Black Frizzled Fowl, with a proud cock and hen proudly displayed. The Black Frizzled breed, also known as Plymouth Rocks or Plymouth Barred, was bred by J.W. Ludlow and achieved third place in any variety class at Oxford in 1872. The intricately detailed illustration, created by J.W. Ludlow and published in Lewis Wright's The Illustrated Book of Poultry in 1890, showcases the unique plumage of this Victorian-era favorite. The fowl's black feathers are adorned with a distinctive frizzle, giving them a fluffy, textured appearance. The Black Frizzled breed was a popular choice during the late 19th century poultry craze, with breeders and collectors striving to create the most exotic and visually appealing birds. The chickens were often shown off at agricultural shows, with Sir Thomas and Lady Irene Ainsworth, among other notable figures, taking part in the breeding and exhibition of these birds. The image also reflects the ornithological interest of the time, as well as the game bird culture that was prevalent during the Victorian era. Although the practice of cockfighting had been outlawed in Britain since 1835, the fascination with these birds continued, leading to a feverish obsession with breeding and exhibiting various poultry breeds. This beautiful chromolithograph, created by Vincent Brooks Day & Son after an illustration by J.W. Ludlow, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the Black Frizzled Fowl's unique beauty and the Victorian era's fascination with these intriguing birds.
