EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait graces the cover of Bystander magazine's October 1929 issue, featuring none other than the Marchioness of Carisbrooke, Irene Denison (1890-1956). Born as Lady Irene Denison, she was the eldest daughter of the 9th Earl of Londesborough and Lady Evelyn Primrose. Her life took an extraordinary turn when she married Prince Alexander of Battenberg, later known as the Marquis of Carisbrooke, in 1913. Prince Alexander was a first cousin of King George V and a grandson of Prince Albert, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The Marchioness of Carisbrooke's elegance and grace are on full display in this striking photograph. Her refined attire, with its high neckline and long sleeves, is a testament to the fashion trends of the era. Her piercing gaze and poised demeanor exude an air of sophistication and confidence. The intricate detailing of her hat and the delicate pearls at her neck add to the overall elegance of the portrait. The Marchioness of Carisbrooke's marriage to Prince Alexander brought her into the heart of the British aristocracy, and she became a prominent figure in high society. Despite her privileged background, she was known for her kindness and generosity, and she dedicated much of her time to charitable causes. This image captures a moment in time, showcasing the beauty and grace of a woman who was not only a member of the British royal family but also a respected philanthropist and beloved member of her community. This evocative portrait, published on the cover of Bystander magazine in 1929, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on British history.
