In this striking photograph, Charles G. Dawes, an American banker, general, diplomat, and Republican politician, poses confidently with a serious expression. Dawes, born on February 5, 1865, in Marion, Ohio, rose to prominence in the financial world before turning to politics. He served as the Class A Director of the American Bankers Association and as the President of the Chicago Planetarium. During World War I, Dawes was appointed as the Chairman of the War Finance Committee, where he played a crucial role in raising funds for the war effort. After the war, he was sent as a diplomat to Paris to negotiate war reparations with Germany. His efforts resulted in the Dawes Reparations Plan, which provided a more lenient payment schedule for Germany. In 1925, Dawes was elected as the Vice President of the United States under Calvin Coolidge. He served for four years, during which he advocated for a balanced budget and a reduction in government spending. Dawes also chaired the Dawes Commission, which oversaw the removal of Native Americans from their lands in the Indian Territory and their relocation to Oklahoma. After leaving office, Dawes returned to his banking career and served as the Governor of the State of Illinois. He passed away on December 23, 1951, at the age of 86. This photograph, taken circa 1927, captures Dawes in the prime of his political career, as a respected and influential figure in American finance and politics.
