This handcoloured steel engraving, titled 'Animaux Perdus' or 'Lost Animals,' is a stunning illustration of extinct creatures from the age of the dinosaurs and other prehistoric eras. The print, created by Louis Auguste de Sainson and published in Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) between 1834 and 1839, showcases a captivating array of extinct fauna. At the center of the image, the mighty dinosaur, a symbol of prehistoric power and mystery, towers above other extinct creatures. Surrounding the dinosaur are various marine animals, including the ichthyosaur and plesiosaur. The ichthyosaur, a marine reptile, is depicted with its streamlined body, elongated snout, and flipper-like limbs, perfectly adapted for life in the water.
