EDITORS COMMENTS
In this handcoloured copperplate engraving from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1834, a diverse group of Muslim men and women are depicted, each representing various aspects of Muslim life during that era. At the center, a Muslim man dressed in the traditional white robes and headdress of a Hajji, or pilgrim to Mecca, is shown in deep contemplation, likely reflecting on the spiritual journey that lies ahead. Nearby, a Muslim woman in a flowing, colorful robe and headscarf sits demurely, her hands folded in her lap. To the left, another Muslim man is dressed in travel clothes, with a backpack slung over his shoulder and a turban covering his head. A Dervish saint, identifiable by his long, flowing robes and distinctive headdress, sits in a meditative position, lost in thought. An astrologer, or Tagessa, is depicted with a star chart spread out before him, studying the heavens to provide guidance and insight to those who seek it. A muleteer, or camel driver, stands nearby, ready to transport travelers and their belongings across the desert. In the foreground, a Bedouin girl from the region of Beja (Beggia) in Tunisia is shown, her traditional headdress adorned with intricate beadwork and her eyes filled with curiosity. A barber, or Kagiem, is seen in the background, tending to a customer's shaving needs. This intricately detailed illustration offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Muslim life during the early 19th century, showcasing the diversity and complexity of the Muslim world.
