This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Nereids," is a stunning illustration from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Carini, with drawings directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to bring the natural world to life through his art. The illustration depicts several species of Nereids, which are deep-sea polychaete worms. The first Nereid shown, Leodice antennata, is identified by its long antennae and fan-like appendages. The second Nereid, Nereidonta antennata, is characterized by its feather-like duster and spirobranchus, or spiral branchiae. The third Nereid, Eunice sanguinea, is distinguished by its red coloration and the presence of the Sabella spallanzanii, a type of tubeworm, attached to its body.
