EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving by Corsi, from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1843, offers a captivating view of two iconic landmarks in Rome: The Ponte Sant'Angelo and Castel Sant'Angelo. The bridge, built by the Emperor Hadrian in 134 AD, is depicted with its statues of angels and the Trajan's Column in the foreground. In the background, the majestic Castel Sant'Angelo, also known as the Mole Adriana, stands tall. Originally commissioned by Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family, the castle later served as a fortress and a papal residence. The Trajan's Column, visible to the left, is adorned with intricate reliefs depicting the military campaigns of Emperor Trajan. The Antonine columns, located to the right of the bridge, are also depicted in this illustration. The engraving provides a unique historical perspective, showcasing the architectural grandeur of ancient Rome, with St. Peter's Basilica visible in the distance. This illustration is an invaluable resource for those interested in Roman architecture, history, and fashion, offering a glimpse into the past through the meticulous details and vibrant handcolours.
