EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate print showcases the River Lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis, also known as the Lampern or Lesser Lamprey. The illustration is taken from Edward Donovan's Natural History of British Fishes, published by Donovan and Rivington in London between 1802 and 1808. Donovan, a renowned Irish naturalist and artist, meticulously drew and engraved this image to capture the intricate details of this fascinating fish species. The River Lamprey is a type of eel-like, anadromous fish, meaning it spends most of its life in freshwater but migrates to the ocean to spawn. It is distinguished by its elongated, eel-like body, covered in small, cycloid scales, and five to seven gill slits on the sides of its head. Unlike their marine relatives, river lampreys lack a dorsal fin and possess a large, toothed sucking disc on the front of their head, which they use to attach themselves to rocks or the bodies of other fish to feed. This illustration is a testament to the scientific curiosity and artistic prowess of the early 19th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the River Lamprey to life, offering a glimpse into the natural history of this unique and intriguing fish species. The Natural History of British Fishes was a groundbreaking work that documented over 1,100 species of fish found in the British Isles, contributing significantly to the fields of ichthyology and zoology.
