EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Lari Viali and Lustratio Rite: Roman Household Gods and Purification Ceremony This image showcases two distinct yet interconnected aspects of Roman religious practices: the Roman Lararium shrine and the Lustratio purification rite. The Lararium shrine, depicted on the left, is adorned with statues of the Lares, the Roman household gods, represented here as two young men in tunics and coturn sandals, each holding a drinking horn. These genii of Augustus are a symbol of the protection and prosperity granted to Roman households. On the right, a marble bas-relief from Otricoli illustrates the Lustratio purification rite, specifically a dairy cow being purified. This ritual was essential for ensuring the health and fertility of livestock and the prosperity of the Roman agricultural community. The Etruscan priest, dressed in ceremonial robes, performs the purification by pouring a libation from a patera (a shallow, flat-bottomed bowl) over the cow's head while making a hand gesture, possibly to ward off evil spirits. The leaping priests, or Salii, in the background, wearing bronze shields and annulia (round shields with a central boss), are part of the procession that accompanied the Lustratio rite. This historical illustration, created as a handcoloured copperplate engraving by Corsi for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," offers a fascinating glimpse into the religious practices and everyday life of ancient Rome.
