EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases a stunning collection of marine life specimens from the Cape of Good Hope, meticulously illustrated by Christian Leinberger for Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae, published by Blusse and Son in Nuremberg in 1771. The illustration features a sea fan coral (1), a large and elegant coral with feathery branches, displaying its vibrant colors and intricate structure. Next to it, two types of sea moss are depicted: Fucus longifolius simbriatus (2) and Lichenastrum (3). The former is characterized by its long, fringed fronds, while the latter exhibits a more compact and branching form. Among the other marine wonders, the engraving highlights the Keratophyton album (4), a type of red alga, and the sea fir, Sertularia pennata (5). The sea fir is a hydrozoan colony, with delicate, feathery branches that resemble those of a fir tree. The intricacy and detail of the engraving bring to life the diverse and fascinating marine ecosystems of the Cape of Good Hope, as they were observed and documented during the 18th century. These precious specimens were part of the Wunderkammer or Cabinet of Curiosities of P.L. Muller, a testament to the natural world's beauty and wonder.
