EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the intricate beauty of Siphonophores, specifically the species Diphyes dispar, also known as Discophora boryi, Diphyes del Bory, Eudora ondulosa, Disopra jaeana, and Discomedusa disc. The illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy. The engraving was expertly executed by Corsi, with drawings directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin (1775-1840) was a renowned French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, known for his exceptional attention to detail and ability to capture the essence of his subjects. Siphonophores are a type of colonial hydrozoan, characterized by their long, trailing tentacles that can reach up to 50 meters in length. The individual polyps that make up the colony are connected by a common gastrovasculature, allowing them to share nutrients and waste. The species depicted in this engraving, Diphyes dispar, is known for its distinctive bell-shaped bells and long, slender tentacles. This beautiful and intricate illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the past, showcasing the exquisite detail and artistry of 19th-century scientific illustration. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history.
