EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases the skeletons of two distinct marine mammals: the Common Seal (Phoca vitulina, or Phoque commun in French) and the Australian Sea Lion (Neophoca cinerea, or Phoque austral otarie in French). The Common Seal, also known as the Harp Seal, is a widespread species found in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. Its skeleton, depicted on the left, displays the typical features of a pinniped, with a long, flexible spine, short limb bones, and a broad thorax. On the right, the skeleton of the Australian Sea Lion, an otariid species native to the southern coasts of Australia and New Zealand, reveals distinct differences. Its elongated, flexible spine is similar to that of a seal, but its limb bones are more robust and adapted for propulsion in water. The Australian Sea Lion is also characterized by its large, wing-like front flippers, which are used for swimming and climbing onto rocks. The meticulous detail and artistry of this engraving serve to highlight the unique anatomical adaptations of these fascinating marine creatures, providing a captivating glimpse into the natural world of the 19th century.
