EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the starfish or sea star, Asterias rubens, also known as the yellow-footed starfish. The intricate illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin, who was born in 1775, is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. His meticulous attention to detail and mastery of the copperplate stipple engraving technique are evident in this beautiful image. The starfish in the illustration is shown with its five arms radiating out from a central disc, each arm ending in a small, suction cup-covered foot. The starfish's yellow feet are prominently featured, giving it its common name. The background of the illustration is adorned with various shells and other marine life, adding to the natural beauty of the image. The starfish, Asterias rubens, is also known as the Brazilian starfish or the giant starfish. It is a large, tortoise-like marine invertebrate that can grow up to 50 cm in diameter. It is found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and is an important part of the marine ecosystem. Unfortunately, this species is considered vulnerable due to overfishing and habitat destruction. The intricate and detailed illustration of the yellow-footed starfish is a testament to the skill and artistry of the 19th century naturalists and illustrators, and remains a stunning example of the beauty and diversity of the natural world.
