EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Taliesin locomotive in its prime on the Festiniog Railway in North Wales, circa 1887. The Taliesin, named after the mythical Welsh bard, was one of the earliest locomotives to serve on this historic narrow-gauge railway. Built in 1887 by Sharp, Stewart & Co. of Manchester, England, this steam engine was an essential addition to the railway's growing fleet. The Taliesin's distinctive design, with its tall chimney and large driving wheels, is a testament to the late Victorian engineering prowess. The locomotive's intricate details, from the decorative boiler bands to the ornate nameplate, are on full display in this photograph. The Taliesin was not only a symbol of progress for the railway but also a source of pride for the local community. The Festiniog Railway, which opened in 1836, is the oldest independent railway company in the world. It was built to transport slate from the quarries in the Blaenau Ffestiniog area to the port of Porthmadog. The railway's narrow-gauge tracks, at just 1,377 millimeters (54 inches), were designed to navigate the steep terrain and tight curves of the area. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when steam engines ruled the rails and the Taliesin was a marvel of engineering. The image captures the raw power and beauty of this locomotive as it chugs along the tracks of the Festiniog Railway, leaving a trail of steam in its wake.
