EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Carocci after Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1833, portrays the Tomb of Absalom and the entrance to the Cave of Jehosophat in the Kidron Valley, located in the Holy Land. The image, copied from Luigi Mayer's "Views in Egypt, Palestine and Other Parts of the Ottoman Empire," published in 1804, offers a glimpse into the rich history and biblical significance of this intriguing site. The Tomb of Absalom, also known as Absalom's Pillar, is depicted on the left side of the image. According to the Old Testament, Absalom, the third son of King David, was a rebellious prince who sought to usurp the throne. After his death in battle, his body was left hanging in a tree for a day as a sign of public disgrace. His loyal followers then gathered his body and buried it in a magnificent tomb, which is believed to be the structure shown in the engraving. On the right side of the image, the entrance to the Cave of Jehosophat is depicted. This cave is mentioned in the Old Testament as the place where King Jehoshaphat and his army hid from their enemies during a battle. The cave is also believed to be the site where the prophet Elijah performed a miraculous act of dividing the Jordan River, allowing Jehoshaphat and his army to cross safely. The intricate details of the engraving, from the ornate pillars of the tomb to the winding path leading to the cave entrance, transport us back in time to a place of biblical significance and historical importance. This image offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing a window into the rich history and culture of the Holy Land during the Ottoman Empire era.
