EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Virginia Spiderwort, Tradescantia virginiana, a native wildflower of eastern North America. The intricately detailed illustration was created in 1837 as part of Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The Virginia Spiderwort is a herbaceous perennial that produces tricolored flowers, with three petals of blue, white, and purple. The common name "spiderwort" refers to the spider-like markings on the underside of the leaves. The plant is also known by several other names, including Selliguea virginiana, Fea's Sword Fern, and Blue-eyed Grass. The illustration was engraved by Giarre, and published by Batelli e Figli. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the delicate rendering of the plant's veins, the texture of its leaves, and the precise depiction of its flowers. The hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the image, making it a true work of art. This historical botanical illustration is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, as well as the skill and artistry of the illustrator and engraver. It is a valuable resource for botanical research and a delight for anyone with an appreciation for the natural world.
