EDITORS COMMENTS
This catalog illustration showcases a selection of exquisite donations to a post-war charity bazaar in the late 1890s, during the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The first item, a carpet (38), is a magnificent creation from the Imperial Factory at Hereke, Turkey. Based on an ancient design from the museum of antiquities in Constantinople, it was generously donated by the Sultan himself. The second offering (39) is an ancient embroidery on silk cloth, also donated by the Sultan, adding a touch of Eastern elegance to the collection. The third item (40) is an ancient Japanese bronze vase, adorned with intricate figures, and graciously donated by Marshal Fuad Pasha. The fourth donation (41) is a candlestick from Saxony, decorated with delicate flowers, and was kindly given by Tahsin Bey, the First Secretary to the Sultan. Lastly, the fifth item (42) is a mirror framed with enamel, mounted on twisted columns, and featuring a drawer in tortoiseshell, containing gold toilet accessories. This beautiful piece was a generous gift from Ahmed Zulkifle Pasha, the son-in-law of the Sultan. These ornate and intricately designed items were donated to aid wounded soldiers and their families, victims of the war, as part of the Ottoman Empire's patronage efforts during this time. The illustration, produced in the Chromolithograph technique, captures the essence of the Eastern and French influences that characterized the Ottoman Empire during this period. The catalog serves as a reminder of the generosity and cultural richness that marked this era in Turkish history.
