EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of the devastating Paris flood of January 28, 1910, on Rue de Bievre. The Seine River had reached an unprecedented level of 9.5 meters above the normal, submerging large parts of the city. In this image, we see a group of stranded pedestrians, standing waist-deep in the murky waters, attempting to navigate their way through the flooded streets. A gendarme, standing on a makeshift platform, keeps watch over the scene, ensuring the safety of those around him. The once bustling streets of Paris now resemble a watery wasteland, with the reflection of the grey, overcast sky casting an eerie pall over the scene. The Maximum level of the floodwaters brought Paris to a standstill, leaving its residents to deal with the aftermath of this natural disaster. The French capital, renowned for its beauty and culture, was brought to its knees, and it would take months for the city to recover from the devastating floodwaters. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the power of nature and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
