EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra) and Jacapa or Silver-beaked Tanager (Ramphocelus carbo)," is an exquisite example of natural history illustration from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, published in Paris, France between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving, directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and published by F.G. Levrault, showcases two vibrant and captivating birds - the Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra) and the Jacapa or Silver-beaked Tanager (Ramphocelus carbo). The Summer Tanager, with its fiery red plumage and black wings, is perched on a branch, its beak slightly open as if in song. The Jacapa Tanager, with its silver-beaked brilliance, sits on a leafy branch behind the Summer Tanager, its green and black plumage contrasting beautifully with the red of its companion. The intricate detail and lifelike quality of the illustration are a testament to the skill and artistry of Pretre and the engraving team. The use of handcoloring adds an additional layer of depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history illustration. This engraving is not only a beautiful work of art but also an important historical document, providing a record of these birds for generations to come.
