Amelia's unwavering commitment to women's emancipation began in earnest after she read Elizabeth Cady Stanton's influential publication, The Revolution, in 1869. However, it was her adoption and promotion of trousers for women that truly set Amelia apart. In the late 1850s, she began wearing full trousers, or 'Turkish breeches,' as an alternative to the restrictive and impractical hoop skirts that were the fashion of the time. She championed the benefits of trousers for women's comfort, mobility, and equality. This photograph, taken likely during the late 1800s, captures Amelia Bloomer in the prime of her activism.
