This striking Carte de Visite captures the distinguished and authoritative presence of Edward Balston, Headmaster of the prestigious Eton College in England during the mid-19th century. Dressed in the traditional attire of a Victorian cleric, Balston wears a long black robe and a mortar board adorned with tassels, signifying his academic and ecclesiastical status. Born in 1813, Balston began his career as a schoolmaster before being appointed as the Headmaster of Eton College in 1856. His tenure at Eton was marked by significant reforms aimed at modernizing the curriculum and improving the living conditions of the students. Balston was not only an accomplished educator but also held various ecclesiastical positions, including Vicar of Hitcham, Archdeacon of Derby, and Rector of Bakewell.
