EDITORS COMMENTS
November 1940: Italians Take Berbera - A Triumphant Moment in the Italian Campaign of North Africa This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the Italian conquest of Fort Berbera, located on the northeastern coast of present-day Somalia in North Africa. The date is November 1940, and the Italian army, under the command of General Rodolfo Graziani, has successfully repelled a British counterattack, securing their hold on the strategic fortress. In the foreground, Italian soldiers are seen triumphantly raising their tricolour flag, a symbol of their victory and their nation's dominance. The flag, with its distinctive green, white, and red vertical stripes, flutters proudly in the wind, a stark contrast against the arid, sandy backdrop of the African landscape. The Italian campaign in North Africa, also known as the Western Desert Campaign, was a significant part of the Second World War. The conflict began in September 1940, when Italian forces invaded Egypt from their colony of Libya. The British, determined to protect their strategic interests in the region, responded with a counterattack. Despite initial successes, the Italians were eventually pushed back, and the tide of the war turned against them. The Battle of Berbera, depicted in this photograph, was a crucial turning point. The Italians' victory allowed them to hold on to a key strategic position and buy valuable time to regroup and reorganize. However, the Italians' fortunes would not last long. The British, with the support of the Commonwealth forces, eventually drove them out of North Africa, marking the end of Italian dominance in the region. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a brief but significant moment in history, when the Italians celebrated their victory in the face of adversity.
