EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a pivotal moment in the construction history of one of London's most iconic landmarks: the Great Bell, better known as Big Ben, entering the arch of the nearly completed Clock Tower at the Palace of Westminster in 1858. The Great Bell, which was cast by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, weighed an impressive 13.5 tons and was the largest bell ever made for a clock at that time. The image shows the bell being carefully maneuvered into position using a complex system of levers and a tramway. A team of skilled laborers, dressed in heavy workwear, can be seen working diligently to guide the massive bell into the tower. The intricate machinery, pulleys, and ropes are all in motion, creating a sense of energy and determination. The Clock Tower, which was designed by Augustus Pugin and Edward Barry, was undergoing construction from 1843 to 1859. The installation of the Great Bell was a significant milestone in the project, as it marked the beginning of the clock's functionality. The clock, which was designed by Ian F.B. Pearson and Edward John Dent, was completed in 1859 and has been keeping accurate time ever since. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the labor-intensive process of installing such a monumental piece of machinery during the Victorian era. It also highlights the ingenuity and engineering prowess of the time, as well as the determination and hard work of the laborers involved. The image is a testament to the rich history of London and the iconic status of Big Ben as a symbol of British timekeeping and tradition.
