The Amsterdam Islanders, also known as the Amsterdamers or the Malouines, were primarily engaged in whaling and sealing. The boats in the foreground of the image are typical of those used by the islanders for their maritime pursuits. The larger boat, with its distinctive high prow and stern, is a typical Dutch whaleboat, designed for long voyages and rough seas. The smaller boat, with its outrigger, was used for fishing and shorter trips.
