EDITORS COMMENTS
The Peace of Westphalia, signed at Osnabrück and Munster on October 24, 1648 (with additional signatures added on that date), marked the end of the Thirty Years' War in Europe, one of the longest and most devastating conflicts in European history. The war, which began in 1618, was primarily fought between the Holy Roman Empire and the Protestant states, with France and Spain also involved. The Peace of Westphalia brought an end to the hostilities, although France and Spain continued their fighting in other theaters. This historic document, depicted in this print, represents a significant turning point in European history, as it recognized the sovereignty of the various German states and paved the way for the modern system of international relations based on the balance of power. The Peace of Westphalia is considered a seminal event in the development of the modern state system and the beginning of the end of the old feudal order. This print commemorates the signing of this momentous treaty at Osnabrück and Munster on August 6, 1648.
