EDITORS COMMENTS
In October 1840, the remains of Napoleon Bonaparte, the legendary French military and political leader who was exiled to the remote island of St. Helena in 1815, were transferred from the island to France. In this historic scene, the prince de Joinville, Louis-Philippe's son, stands on the deck of the ship La Belle Poule as the casket containing Napoleon's body is being loaded onto the vessel. The prince, dressed in a naval uniform, looks on intently as the procession of soldiers and officials carry the casket down the gangway and place it on the ship. The transfer of Napoleon's remains from St. Helena to France was a significant event in European history. After his defeat in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, Napoleon was exiled to the island, where he lived until his death in 1821. His body was left on the island for over twenty years, as various European powers debated what to do with it. Finally, in 1840, the French government, under the reign of King Louis-Philippe, arranged for the remains to be brought back to France for a state funeral. The journey to France was a long and arduous one, taking several weeks. The ship La Belle Poule sailed from St. Helena with a large entourage, including a contingent of French soldiers and officials, as well as numerous journalists and curious onlookers. The arrival of the ship in France was met with great fanfare, as the French people eagerly awaited the return of their legendary leader. This photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, captures a poignant moment in the transfer of Napoleon's remains from St. Helena to France. The image of the prince de Joinville, standing on the deck of the ship as the casket is loaded, serves as a powerful reminder of the historical significance of this event and the enduring legacy of Napoleon Bonaparte.
