EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Aircraft Engineering Corporation Ace K-1 N69097, a single-seat biplane that made history as one of the first aircraft to be built on an assembly line. Designed by the visionary team of Alexander Klemin, Professor of Aeronautical Engineering at NYU, and N.W. Dalton, the prototype of this remarkable aircraft originally featured a Ford T motor. Manufactured at the ACE Flying Field in New York City's Central Park in 1920, the Ace K-1 boasted a primitive yet innovative design, with four self-aligning I-struts, an all-wood frame, and a price tag of just $2,500. Four examples of this biplane were built, one of which created a stir in the national press when it made a daring landing on Clay Street in Oakland, California, as a publicity stunt on January 22, 1920. The design was further refined in 1920, with beefed-up struts, a redesigned fuselage featuring an enclosed motor, and folding wings. In 1931, two additional Ace K-1s were produced, one with a Salmson AD-9 engine and the other with a LeBlond 5D, registered as Ace 300 and 200, respectively. One of these historic aircraft was discovered and restored in California in 1955. This image captures a moment in aviation history, showcasing the Ace K-1 N69097 as a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of its creators. With its distinctive biplane design and rich history, this aircraft continues to captivate aviation enthusiasts and historians alike.
