EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Grumman TC-4C Academe 155729, affectionately known as the "Spirit of Fentress," which was a significant part of the United States Navy's VA-42 The Green Pawns squadron. Delivered to the US Navy on November 6, 1967, and retired from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base's Aircraft Boneyard (AMARC) on April 26, 1994, this aircraft served a crucial role as a Bombardier/Navigator trainer for both the US Navy and Marine Corps A-6 crews. The TC-4C Academe, with its base code AD and call sign 577, was a modified version of the Grumman A-6 Intruder, featuring a nose radome similar to the Intruder, a simulated A-6 cockpit, and four bombardier/navigator consoles for A-6 crew training. Nine of these modified Gulfstream I aircraft were built for this specific purpose. This photograph, estimated to have been taken around 1970, captures the Spirit of Fentress in its prime, showcasing the intricate details of its design and the dedication of the crew who operated this essential training aircraft. The TC-4C Academe played a vital role in preparing the next generation of A-6 pilots and navigators for their missions, making it an essential piece of aviation history.
