EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage photograph, dated 1962, captures the sleek and elegant Piper PA.28-160 Cherokee 160 with the registration number G-ARUP, parked at Woolsington airfield. The Cherokee 160, manufactured by Piper Aircraft Corporation, is a single-engine, four-seat, fixed-wing aircraft that first flew in 1959. This particular model, with manufacturing serial number 28-127, was a popular choice among private pilots due to its versatility, reliability, and relatively low operating costs. The Cherokee 160 featured a retractable landing gear system, which allowed for improved ground clearance and reduced drag during flight. Its Lycoming O-320-A engine delivered 150 horsepower, enabling a cruising speed of around 130 miles per hour. The aircraft's streamlined design and efficient engine made it a favorite among pilots for both short hops and cross-country flights. In this photograph, we see the Cherokee 160 in its prime, with its wings gleaming in the sunlight and the distinctive Piper insignia proudly displayed on the tail. The image offers a glimpse into the golden age of general aviation, a time when flying was an adventure and the open skies beckoned to those with a spirit of exploration and a love for the freedom of flight.
