EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases two iconic helicopters of the past, the Westland Whirlwind Series 1 G-ANFH (msn WA15) and Bell 47B-3 G-AKFN, parked at Gatwick Airport during the 1950s-1960s era. The Westland Whirlwind Series 1, G-ANFH, was built in 1953 and delivered to Gatwick for British European Airways (BEA). It later passed through various hands, including BEA Helicopters, Autair Helicopter Services, and Bristow Helicopters, before being retired and preserved at The Helicopter Museum in Weston-Super-Mare. This historic helicopter gained fame as it featured in the closing scenes of The Beatles film "A Hard Day's Night" and in the scene where Denholm Elliot escapes from the maze in "You Must Be Joking." The Bell 47B-3, G-AKFN, was registered to BEA in 1947 and joined the BEA Helicopters fleet in 1964. Its ownership then transferred to Autair Limited, Farmair Limited, and was eventually withdrawn from use in 1967. This Bell 47B-3 helicopter holds a significant place in aviation history, having been a part of the evolution of helicopter transportation during the mid-20th century.
