EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, renowned Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002) is seen at his home in Tenerife, Canary Islands, in the year 1995. The 90s were a time of reflection and relaxation for Heyerdahl, following his groundbreaking expeditions that redefined our understanding of ancient maritime civilizations. Heyerdahl gained worldwide fame in 1947 when he successfully sailed the Kon-Tiki raft, made of balsa wood and papyrus, from South America to the Polynesian islands. This daring expedition challenged the prevailing theories about the origins of Polynesian people, demonstrating that they could have traveled from East Asia to the Pacific using primitive boats. In the image, Heyerdahl, dressed casually in a green shirt and trousers, appears thoughtful and content as he sits on a terrace overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The serene background, with the blue sea and clear sky, highlights the explorer's connection to the natural world and his lifelong quest for knowledge. The Kon-Tiki expedition was just one of Heyerdahl's many adventures. He also led the Ra II expedition in 1969, which aimed to retrace the ancient Egyptian Pharaohs' journey to the New World. Heyerdahl's relentless curiosity and determination to challenge established beliefs earned him the nickname "The Ra II Man." As he entered his seventh decade, Heyerdahl found solace in the Canary Islands, where he continued to write, lecture, and inspire future generations of explorers. This photograph captures a moment of respite for the legendary figure, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the vastness of the ocean that had been his constant companion throughout his extraordinary life.
