EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image, renowned Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002) is seen at the Pyramids of Guimar in Tenerife, Canary Islands, during his seventh day on the island in 1995. The adventurer, best known for his daring Kon-Tiki expedition, is shown wearing a green Earth Expeditions t-shirt and a sun hat, as he stands before the ancient structures, deep in thought. The Kon-Tiki expedition, which took place in 1947, saw Heyerdahl and his crew sailing a balsa wood raft named "Kon-Tiki" from Peru to the Polynesian islands, proving that pre-Columbian contact between the two regions was possible. This groundbreaking journey brought Heyerdahl international fame and solidified his place in history as a pioneering explorer. As he entered his sixties, Heyerdahl continued to explore and share his knowledge with the world. In 1995, he visited Tenerife to study the ancient Guanches, the indigenous people of the Canary Islands, and their connection to Polynesia. The Pyramids of Guimar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were a significant focus of his research. This photograph, taken during Heyerdahl's seventh day on the island, captures the explorer in his element – surrounded by history, deep in thought, and undeterred by the challenges that lay before him. The image is a testament to Heyerdahl's unwavering curiosity and his commitment to unraveling the mysteries of our past.
